The Coalition for Responsible Data Center Development, Evitable, and Together Against AI released the Data Center Opposition Report on April 27, 2026. This report documents an unprecedented surge in grassroots opposition to hyperscale AI data centers across the United States.

Opposition to data centers in the U.S. is growing rapidly. We recorded the size and development of opposition groups on Facebook, the main online platform used by the groups to organize. Local opposition to data centers in the U.S. is a nationwide phenomenon, with opposition groups in 37 states. This spans both red and blue states. As of May 2026, there are at least 345 local opposition groups totaling over 428,000 members. This document shows the statistics for May 2026. It is a follow-up to our April report, which goes into more detail and and includes interviews with organizers.
