Data Centers, the Doomsday Clock, and the Sixth Mass Extinction Event

By Matthew Shaw, Volunteer with the Coalition for Responsible Data Center Development

Introduction

Scientists have been sounding the alarm on a series of secular apocalypses for the past 79 years with the birth of the Doomsday Clock. Other (or more likely, an overlapping group of) scientists have been sounding the alarm over the Sixth Mass Extinction event in our planet's history.  But what do these messianic visions have to do with that ethereal notion of the cloud? Laws, Ordinances, and Regulations of Data Center

Communities across the country and around the world are struggling to regulate Data Centers in their neighborhoods, cities, counties, states, and nationwide. The Coalition for Responsible Data Center Development is in the process of developing a comprehensive dataset of regulations for individuals, NGOs, and governments to choose what types of regulations best fit their needs. We understand that regulation is not a one-size-fits-all situation; some areas will want a full moratorium while others will want to protect water, rate payers, farmers, etc. While this is in progress, we want to share some of the sources our database will be drawing upon, which may be found HERE.
